Paxil Is Causing Major Birth Defects

Allow me to open this article by being as direct as possible when I say that Doctors who are complicit in this are essentially criminal. It is ultimately difficult for me to see it any other way. A baby, who has no choice in their own health, should not be subjected to pharmaceutical poison while in utero. But unfortunately, that’s exactly what’s happening and these babies are paying a heavy price for these decisions.

Pregnant women who use Paxil in the first trimester are linked to a 23 percent increase in risk for major congenital malformations and a 28 percent higher risk of heart defects. Now, it has long been common knowledge around these parts that taking anti-depressants while pregnant is incredibly unhealthy. This study simply puts exact data on just how bad that association is. However, the ultimate response by the medical world is disturbing. According to FoxNews.

“In the majority of cases – mild to moderate depression – psychotherapy and exercise regimens are valid treatment options,” said lead study author Anick Berard of CHU Sainte-Justine and the University of Montreal.

Left untreated, depression during pregnancy is associated with underweight babies who are more likely to wind up in neonatal intensive care, previous research has found. Pregnant women with uncontrolled depression may not eat well or keep up with prenatal visits, and, in the most severe cases they may be at increased risk for suicide.

Like many drugs, antidepressants fall into a gray area during pregnancy, with insufficient evidence to definitively prove the harms or benefits. Often, doctors may reserve drugs for women with more severe depression.

Let’s deal with the first bold text, the if “left untreated…” This is essentially justifying the continued prescribing of poison to babies. At the end of the day, I empathize with anyone suffering from depression, however, as a mother and as the OBGYN, you are obligated to find a non-toxic method to resolve the issue. To say that depression may end up being worse than a drug that shows a 23% increase in birth defects is blasphemy at the highest of levels.

The second portion expresses that antidepressants fall into a gray area during pregnancy. No, actually they don’t: they cause birth defects, there is nothing “gray” about this area at all. Any Doctor prescribing Paxil or any other antidepressant is complicit in harming babies. While Doctors and Pharmaceutical companies try their hardest to demonize alternative health, it should be noted that alternative health presents a great many options for resolving depression. These options, of course, aren’t profitable so therefore they aren’t often prescribed. Products such as Paxil drive revenue and you can be assured that pharma doesn’t want to completely lose the pregnant women demographic. How large is that demographic, you ask? Well pretty darn large, actually, as it is statistically at 13% of all pregnant women. That’s an enormous demographic! But what’s worse? 23% of all women who are pregnant report depression. So the terrifying idea here is that pharma could potentially almost double sales with the assistance of Doctors.

I am in no way condemning pregnant women for feeling depressed, I’m condemning the pharmaceutical / medical industry for allowing such egregious activity to take place all in the name of profit. We should be creating the absolute best environments for pregnant women, instead, in some ways, we are just blowing smoke in their faces all in the chase for dollar bills. What if we told pregnant women to smoke to resolve their depression instead? According to WebMD, the risks would be similar.

Babies born to mothers who smoked had roughly 20% to 30% higher odds of having shortened or missing arms and legs, cleft lips and cleft palates, and abnormally shaped heads or faces compared to babies born to nonsmoking mothers.

Perspective is an eye-opening thing, isn’t it?
